Karl Klotz, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro recently toured all five stations of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District to review and update their equipment. Along with the addition of new apparatus, this department is also in the process of renumbering its fleet, a move that reflects ongoing modernization efforts across the area. During the visit, several new and updated units were captured on camera. Among them were three ambulances, two engines, two tenders, and a brand-new boat. This expansion highlights the department's growing capabilities and commitment to community safety. McHenry has transitioned from having just one tender to now operating with three, with only the downtown station lacking one. The new twin 3,500-gallon tenders were built by US Tanker on IHC 7500 chassis with extended cabs. Tender 1272 is stationed at Station 2, while Tender 1274 is at Station 4. These units are equipped with a 500-GPM pump and offer increased water capacity for more effective firefighting operations. Two new Pierce engines have been added since our last report, and one was relocated. The latest models are mounted on Impel XM chassis rather than the previous Velocity model. Engine 41 is now based at Station 1, and Engine 43 is at Station 3. Engine 44, stationed at Station 4, was previously known as Engine 10 at Station 1. Two additional engines are currently on order, with each expected to arrive every six months. The ambulance fleet has also seen some changes. The newest unit is a 2013 Type I ambulance by Osage, stationed at Station 4 as Ambulance 54. Another new ambulance, a 2012 Type I AEV, is now operating at Station 1 as Ambulance 51. Ambulance 52, a 2010 Osage Type I, was also added to the fleet since our last visit and is now stationed at Station 2. In addition, Boat 1292, a 24-foot rigid-hull inflatable boat built by Clark Boats in 2013, is now located at Station 2. This vessel enhances the department’s ability to respond to water-related emergencies. Overall, the updates reflect a significant investment in infrastructure and equipment, ensuring that the McHenry Township FPD remains well-equipped to serve its community.
