The Wauconda Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 4, responded to a single-family home fire on Madison Avenue at approximately 1:15 PM today. The incident occurred at 1116 Madison Avenue, where firefighters discovered intense fire in the garage that had spread into the main house and attic. Due to the severity of the blaze, the call was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm, bringing in additional resources from surrounding departments. At the time of the fire, no one was inside the home. While the garage suffered significant damage, including destruction of a vehicle parked inside, the main house was only affected in the area directly behind the two-story garage. The fire caused extensive structural damage, particularly to the roof and truss system above the garage. Several fire departments provided mutual aid, including units from Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Nunda, Barrington, Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove. These crews worked together to contain and extinguish the fire, with some remaining on scene for overhaul operations. Larry Shapiro arrived after the fire was under control and captured several images of the scene. His photos show the extent of the damage and provide insight into the structure’s layout. One image highlights Wauconda Engine 341, which was the first engine on the scene and had three lines deployed. It’s a 2009 HME/Ferrara Intruder. Another photo reveals a window above the garage that appeared to be a bedroom but was actually an unfinished space with no floor or interior construction. A Google Maps image of the house before the fire shows that there was no second floor above the garage, despite the large window visible in the wall. Several gusset plates supporting the lightweight roof trusses failed during the fire, contributing to the rapid spread of flames. A close-up shot of the damaged trusses illustrates this issue clearly. Mutual aid units were staged on Bonner Road, with apparatus from Round Lake, Mundelein, Countryside, and Long Grove seen waiting for further instructions. A Nunda ambulance was also stationed nearby as part of the response. During the overhaul phase, Wauconda firefighters worked to cool down hot spots in the garage, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished. Larry Shapiro has compiled a gallery of these images, which can be viewed [here](#).
