Autodesk, a leading global software company, has made a significant move in the world of digital content sharing. The company recently announced that its Media & Entertainment (M&E) support and learning materials for its 2014 product line are now available under Creative Commons licensing. This includes an impressive collection of 20,000 pages of documentation, 70 instructional videos, and 140 downloadable 3D asset files. This initiative marks a major step forward in making Autodesk's resources more accessible and collaborative.
Cathy Casserly, CEO of Creative Commons, praised the move, calling it a win for both the organization and the broader design community. “The Internet thrives on the ability to share and build upon each other’s work,†she said. “Creative Commons licenses make this possible without legal barriers. By opening up its resources, Autodesk is showing a deep understanding of the power of creativity and collaboration among its users.â€
This shift was inspired by a request from Paul Duguay, a 3D and multimedia instructor at Collège Communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick in Canada. He had found a series of videos on the Autodesk 3ds Max Learning Channel that fit perfectly into his curriculum. However, he faced challenges in translating the audio into French and providing legal access to the content for his students. With Creative Commons, Autodesk can now enable such sharing, allowing educational institutions and communities to benefit from open and flexible access to valuable learning materials.
Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President at Autodesk, emphasized the importance of this move. “We’re seeing a new digital era where people want to share knowledge, collaborate, and mentor one another,†he said. “With Creative Commons, we’re providing a clear legal framework that allows our global user community to share knowledge effectively. I’m excited to see what artists and creators will do next — whether it’s a Finnish translation of Maya features or a school in Bangladesh teaching 3D animation, the possibilities are endless.â€
In addition to the M&E sector, Autodesk plans to expand Creative Commons licensing across its entire product line. This includes publishing product help materials, Knowledge Base articles, Discussion Forums, and training content from Autodesk University. Once content is released under Creative Commons, it can be freely modified, remixed, and shared around the world.
Earlier this year, Autodesk also joined Creative Commons as an Innovator-level supporter, aligning itself with major companies like Google and eBay, as well as numerous foundations and individual contributors. This partnership underscores Autodesk’s commitment to fostering innovation, creativity, and open access to digital tools.
As part of its ongoing efforts to support education, Autodesk continues to invest in the future of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. The company aims to equip students with the skills and tools needed to succeed in a competitive job market. By offering free access to professional-grade software, Autodesk is helping shape the next generation of designers, engineers, and digital artists.
