The second department within the MABAS Division 27 has now been added to our coverage. This is the South Chicago Heights Fire Department, a single-station fire and emergency services unit that serves an area of 1.5 square miles. The department operates two ambulances and two fire engines, making it a well-equipped and efficient response team for its community. The ambulances in service are from Wheeled Coach and Osage, while the fire engines come from Crimson and American LaFrance—specifically, an older model of the American LaFrance Century before the brand was acquired by Freightliner. What makes this department unique is its use of a Type II style ambulance, which is relatively rare in the region. These types of ambulances are typically more compact and designed for urban or suburban settings, offering a good balance between mobility and medical capabilities. Photos of the station and equipment were generously provided by Jack Connors. The first image shows the South Chicago Heights Fire Department station located at 2729 Jackson Avenue. The second photo highlights one of their Type II ambulances, and the third captures their American LaFrance Century pumper. These images offer a glimpse into the daily operations of this dedicated local department.
