From the Mendota Fire Department: Hello everyone, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share an update regarding an incident we recently handled. On Monday, the 14th, the Mendota and Troy Grove Fire Departments, along with the Mendota Police Department, responded to a significant fire involving a massive pile of wooden pallets just south of Mendota. Upon arrival, our teams were faced with an enormous blaze, estimated at around 8,000 pallets, burning fiercely and generating extreme heat. We immediately called for additional resources through a MABAS ( Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) box alarm, which eventually escalated to a third alarm. Unfortunately, due to strong northerly winds, the fire intensified, posing a real challenge for our crews. Our top priority was protecting nearby structures and preventing the fire from spreading further. One firefighter was overcome by the intense heat and had to be rushed to Saint Paul Medical Center. I'm happy to report that he was released later that same evening, but his situation served as a stark reminder of the dangers our brave firefighters face every day. I am incredibly proud of how all personnel performed under such extreme conditions. Their dedication and teamwork were truly commendable. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the responders who came to assist, including those from M/TG, LaSalle, Peru, Earlville, Amboy, Sublette, LaMoille, Utica, Cherry, West Brooklyn, Paw Paw, Wallace, Shabbona, Leland, Lee, 10/33 ambulance service, ISP District 17, and the dispatchers from Mendota Dispatch, ValCom Dispatch, and Ottawa MABAS Division 25. Special thanks also go out to ComEd for their support during this emergency. It's comforting to know that we have such committed professionals in our community who are always ready to step up when needed. We couldn't have managed this situation without each and every one of them. Best regards, Chief Rutishauser P.S. Attached are some photos taken during the incident. The smoke was immense, and it took several hours to bring the fire under control. Thank you again to everyone involved for your hard work and dedication.
