Estes Court Structure Fire
NAPERVILLE, Ill. — On Wednesday evening, March 3rd, things took a dramatic turn when Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received an alert from an activated fire alarm around 8:31 PM. They promptly sent out a dual-response team to a two-story multifamily residence located on the 1100 block of Estes Court. Just four minutes later, another call came in from someone inside the building reporting a full-blown structure fire at the same address. The PSAP then upgraded the dispatch to a general alarm, sending ten fire vehicles and 24 personnel, including an Incident Commander and an Incident Safety Officer, along with advising everyone in the complex to evacuate immediately.
By 8:37 PM, Squad 8 arrived on the scene and quickly identified smoke and fire emanating from the attic of the house. As they set up incident command and started their 360-degree assessment, word reached them that there might still be people trapped inside. Without hesitation, firefighters sprang into action and successfully rescued three individuals from the building. Thankfully, none of them sustained any injuries during the rescue.
The fire was originating from both the attic and the chimney area. Firefighters swiftly moved in, using aggressive interior tactics combined with coordinated ventilation to put out the flames effectively. They conducted thorough primary and secondary searches, confirming that no one else remained inside. After ensuring the fire was under control, crews focused on overhaul work—exposing any hotspots and clearing out smoke—to ensure safety and prevent further damage. Within 45 minutes, they managed to contain the blaze to just the attic and second floor of the home.
The person who initially called PSAP mentioned that residents had been warned by the building's fire alarm system. The Naperville Fire Department received valuable support from the Naperville Police Department, the Naperville Electric Department, NICOR, and the City’s Transportation, Engineering, and Development Department (TED). Backup station coverage was provided by the Plainfield Fire Protection District and the Bolingbrook Fire Department.
Currently, the Naperville Fire Department's investigation team is looking into what caused this fire. Fortunately, neither the residents nor the firefighters suffered any injuries during the incident. Except for the affected unit, the rest of the building was deemed safe for habitation by the Naperville Transportation, Engineering, and Development Department.
As someone who witnessed the chaos unfold firsthand, it's reassuring to see how well-coordinated everyone was in handling such an emergency. It goes to show the importance of having reliable systems in place and the incredible dedication of our first responders.
