Subject: Urgent Call-Out for a Pallet Fire Incident
From the Mendota Fire Department:
Hi everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share an incident that happened earlier this week on Monday the 14th. The Mendota Fire Department, along with the Troy Grove Fire Department and Mendota Police Department, were called out to a significant pallet fire located just south of Mendota. When we arrived, the situation was much worse than anticipated—there was an enormous blaze fueled by around 8,000 wooden pallets. The fire was not only massive but also extremely intense, reaching temperatures that were hard to imagine.
Immediately upon arrival, we activated a MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) box alarm, which eventually escalated to a third alarm as the fire continued to grow. Unfortunately, due to the northerly winds, the flames spread faster and became even more intense. Our teams worked tirelessly to protect nearby structures and prevent the fire from spreading further.
Unfortunately, during the operation, one of our firefighters succumbed to the extreme heat and had to be rushed to Saint Paul Medical Center. We’re relieved to report that he was released later that same evening after receiving medical attention. It’s a testament to the severity of the situation that even seasoned firefighters faced challenges under such extreme conditions.
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the responders who came together to help. This included personnel from M/TG along with teams from LaSalle, Peru, Earlville, Amboy, Sublette, LaMoille, Utica, Cherry, West Brooklyn, Paw Paw, Wallace, Shabbona, Leland, Lee, 10/33 ambulances, ISP District 17, and dispatchers from Mendota Dispatch, ValCom Dispatch, and Ottawa MABAS Division 25. Special thanks also go to ComEd for their support. Having such committed individuals in our community is invaluable, especially when situations like this arise.
The photos attached really capture the scale of the fire. You can see the massive plumes of smoke rising high into the sky. It was a challenging day, but I’m proud to say that every single person involved did an incredible job under such difficult circumstances.
If you know any of these brave individuals, please join me in thanking them for their dedication and bravery. It’s people like these who make our communities safer every single day.
Best regards,
Chief Rutishauser
P.S. Thanks to Keith for sharing the images!
