Estes Court Structure Fire
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – On Wednesday evening, March 3rd, Naperville's Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received an alert from an activated fire alarm at approximately 8:31 PM. They immediately sent out a dual response to a two-story, multi-family residence located on the 1100 block of Estes Court. Just four minutes later, another call came in from someone inside the building, confirming there was indeed a structure fire at the same address. The PSAP then escalated the response to include a general alarm assignment, bringing in ten fire vehicles and twenty-four personnel, including an Incident Commander and an Incident Safety Officer. Additionally, they advised everyone in the building to evacuate immediately.
By 8:37 PM, Squad 8 arrived on the scene and quickly identified visible smoke and fire emanating from the attic of the two-story home. Command was established right away, and Squad 8 started a thorough 360-degree assessment of the property. During this time, a report came in stating that there might still be people inside the building. Firefighters wasted no time and swiftly entered the premises. Fortunately, three individuals were safely rescued by the firefighters and assessed on-site; none had sustained any injuries.
The fire crews soon determined that the flames were originating from both the attic and the chimney area of the house. Using strategic tactics, they deployed hoses into the structure for an aggressive interior firefighting effort combined with coordinated ventilation to effectively put out the blaze. Comprehensive primary and secondary searches were carried out, ensuring no one else remained inside. Overhaul operations followed, aiming to uncover any lingering hotspots and clear out the thick smoke. Within 45 minutes, the fire was successfully confined to the attic and second floor, sparing the rest of the building from significant damage. It turned out that the resident who initially contacted PSAP credited the building's fire alarm system for alerting the tenants.
Assistance during this incident came from the Naperville Police Department, the Naperville Electric Department, NICOR, and the City’s Transportation, Engineering, and Development Department (TED). Backup station coverage was provided by the Plainfield Fire Protection District and the Bolingbrook Fire Department. The Naperville Fire Department's investigation team is currently looking into the exact cause of the fire. Thankfully, neither the residents nor the firefighters suffered any injuries while handling the situation. Except for the unit affected by the fire, the Transportation, Engineering, and Development Department declared the rest of the building safe for habitation.
This incident serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to have functioning fire alarms in place. Special thanks go out to all the first responders involved in managing this emergency efficiently.
