As I stood there watching the aftermath of the house fire in Arlington Heights on December 6, 2017, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of awe and sadness. The images captured that day tell a story of chaos and resilience, and I wanted to share some additional photos that really capture the intensity of the situation.
The first photo shows smoke billowing from the house, a stark reminder of how quickly flames can spread. It’s a striking image that highlights the power of fire and the urgency firefighters face when responding to such incidents. Larry Shapiro’s photography does an excellent job of capturing the sheer scale of the disaster.
Another shot features Arlington FD Deputy Chief Pete Ahlman pulling a supply line, showcasing the coordinated efforts of the firefighters as they work tirelessly to control the blaze. You can almost hear the crackling of the flames in the background.
In another powerful image, you see firefighters gearing up before entering the house. Their masks symbolize bravery and preparation, readying themselves to face whatever dangers lie ahead. It’s a poignant moment that underscores their courage and dedication.
There’s also a picture of a Pierce tower ladder at the scene, emphasizing the high-tech equipment used by modern firefighting teams. This tool plays a critical role in reaching areas that might otherwise be inaccessible during emergencies.
One of my favorite shots is the one showing firefighters using a tower ladder bucket to ventilate the roof. It’s not just about putting out fires; it’s about creating safe pathways and ensuring everyone involved has the best chance of coming out unscathed.
Lastly, the garage destroyed by the fire serves as a somber testament to the destruction left in its wake. It’s a reminder of both the fragility of property and the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity.

Writing this makes me appreciate the hard work of photographers like Larry Shapiro even more. Capturing moments like these requires skill and patience, and I’m grateful he shared his work with us. Let’s hope for fewer fires in the future, but when they do happen, it’s comforting to know we have people who document them so vividly.
