Today was an exciting day as the Cook County Board President paid a visit to NIPSTA. It was quite the showcase of regional assets that have been supported either partially or fully by the county. There were several MABAS specialty units present, including the impressive ILTF-1, which commenced a multi-day training exercise. Additionally, Air One brought four helicopters to the site, adding an extra layer of operational capability. Meanwhile, the ongoing NIPSTA fire training classes provided a glimpse into the rigorous standards maintained for first responders. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were in attendance and managed to capture some compelling images showcasing the day’s events. One of the highlights was the demonstration of tactical positioning by police officers assigned to Air One. Their expertise was on full display as they showed how to strategically place themselves on the helicopter, making it clear why these operations are crucial for maintaining security. The photos taken by Tim Olk beautifully captured this moment. Larry Shapiro also contributed some fantastic shots. One image highlighted the Cook County Board President being briefed by department heads about the various MABAS, ILTF-1, and Air One assets. Another showcased the ILTF-1 mobile vehicles equipped with metal storage containers, which are vital for transporting essential equipment during emergency responses. Other photographs included a MABAS Support Unit providing a mobile office, an ILTF-1 flatbed lumber truck, and a DOT-owned Huey helicopter that forms part of Air One's fleet. A particularly striking image captured an officer riding on the helicopter skids, offering a unique perspective of the operation. There were more captivating scenes, such as another Air One helicopter in action, an ex-Marine Corps helicopter now part of the Air One team, and a breathtaking aerial view of Glenview looking toward Chicago. Larry’s camera also caught a view of the railroad repair at Shermer Road following the July 4th train derailment, giving viewers a firsthand look at the aftermath and recovery efforts. Additional highlights included a MABAS Support Services Unit with expandable sides to enhance interior workspace, ILTF-1 communication equipment paired with a satellite system, and a portion of the MABAS tent city set up for large-scale operations. The Regional MABAS Assets section featured the Division 3 Communications Unit, Division 3 Air Unit, and Division Decon Unit, all critical components of disaster response strategies.
