German Volkswagen Acquires Swedish Scania Heavy Truck Company
According to recent reports from Belgian media, the Volkswagen Group has successfully completed its acquisition of Scania, a leading Swedish heavy truck manufacturer, for 2.9 billion euros. This deal marks a significant milestone in the European commercial vehicle industry. Following the merger, Volkswagen, along with MAN Commercial Vehicles (which holds a 30% stake in Volkswagen), and Scania will form the largest heavy truck manufacturing group in Europe, surpassing Sweden’s Volvo in market share. The combined entity is expected to hold a 25% share in the over-16-ton segment.
This move comes after years of attempts by other automakers to gain control of Scania. In 2000, Volvo proposed acquiring Scania, but the European Commission blocked the deal due to concerns over potential monopolistic practices. Then, in 2006, the German company MAN launched a hostile takeover bid, but it ultimately failed. Now, with Volkswagen’s successful acquisition, the balance of power in the European truck market is shifting.
The deal still requires final approval from EU regulatory authorities, as such a large-scale merger would be closely scrutinized to ensure fair competition in the sector. If approved, this partnership could reshape the future of commercial vehicle production in Europe, combining Volkswagen’s global reach with Scania’s strong presence in the Nordic region and beyond.
