China is moving from the soda ash country to the country of soda ash

The "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" marked a significant turning point for China's soda ash industry, representing a transition from being a major producer to becoming a strong and competitive global player. During a symposium celebrating the 90th anniversary of China's soda ash industry and the Tianjin Soda Plant, a reporter spoke with the President of the China Soda Industry Association about the journey from a big country to a strong one. Tongdi Li emphasized that the key indicators of this transformation include achieving international standards in technology and equipment, product quality, and environmental management. Heavy soda ash production should account for over two-thirds of total output, and labor productivity must reach advanced levels globally. Additionally, most production processes should be automated, and consumption patterns should align with international benchmarks. He noted that technological innovation has always been a driving force behind the industry’s growth. Over the years, process technologies and equipment have continuously improved, reaching or approaching international standards. Many critical procedures are now automated, significantly boosting efficiency and productivity. In terms of product quality, China has made notable progress. The quality of soda ash has steadily improved, meeting domestic needs and export requirements. Currently, 9 Chinese brand-name soda ash products account for 53.75% of total capacity, while 4 ammonium chloride brands make up 20%. Heavy soda ash production began in the 1980s and has grown rapidly. In 2006, heavy soda ash output reached 4.86 million tons, accounting for 32% of total production. With increasing demand from the real estate and automotive sectors, the need for high-quality flat glass and low-salt soda ash is rising. Internationally, the U.S. charges higher prices for trona due to its low salinity. This highlights the importance of increasing the proportion of low-salt soda ash in China's industry. Most of the 181 million tons of exported soda ash in 2006 was heavy soda ash, emphasizing the need for structural adjustments. Environmental improvements have also been significant. Practices such as using ammonia-alkali waste residue for landscaping, brine recycling, and lime mud refining have shown promising results. However, an irrational industrial structure remains a challenge, leading to high energy consumption and pollution. Through policy guidance and technological upgrades, the industry aims to promote advanced enterprises while phasing out outdated, polluting ones. The natural alkali process, which can achieve zero emissions, is gaining attention for its potential competitiveness. As the industry grows, it's important to develop this process responsibly. Ammonium chloride sales remain a pressing issue. With 90% of its demand tied to compound fertilizers, diversifying sales channels is crucial. Strategies include granulating ammonium chloride, expanding industrial use, exploring decomposition methods, and investing in research for energy-efficient solutions. Building a modern, international logistics system is another priority. Efficient bulk transportation and distribution networks can reduce costs and improve service. China still has room for improvement in this area. As market dynamics evolve, companies must move toward diversification and group development. Several major plants have already formed group structures, and downstream industries are entering the sector, creating opportunities for broader product development. This shift will help the industry adapt and thrive in the long term.
