(NASDAQ: ADSK) has partnered with FMI Corporation to release a groundbreaking industry study titled “Trust Matters: The High Cost of Low Trust.†This research explores the impact of trust levels within construction organizations and project teams, revealing how high trust can lead to significant financial and operational benefits. The findings show that companies with "very high" trust levels outperform their peers in key areas such as profitability, employee retention, and project efficiency.
According to Jay Bowman, research and analytics lead at FMI, “Organizations with very high trust can see millions in annual savings and increased revenue. In an industry where margins are shrinking, improving trust is not just a nice-to-have—it’s a strategic necessity.â€
The study surveyed over 2,500 construction professionals globally, asking them to rate trust levels within their organizations on a scale from 1 (very low) to 5 (very high). The results were then analyzed against performance metrics like repeat business, employee turnover, and project delivery times.

1. **Higher Profitability and Repeat Business**
Organizations with very high trust reported significantly more repeat clients—57% of them worked with the same clients for over 80% of projects. This leads to higher gross margins and lower costs associated with onboarding new clients.

Employees in high-trust environments are more likely to stay with their companies. 56% of professionals in these organizations voluntarily remained in their roles, compared to just 32% in those with average trust. This reduces recruitment costs and helps retain skilled labor during a global labor shortage.

High-trust organizations are twice as confident about meeting project deadlines, leading to fewer delays and cost overruns. FMI estimates these organizations save up to $4 million annually by avoiding schedule slippages.
4. **Greater Employee Engagement**
Employees in high-trust environments are more engaged and willing to go the extra mile. 74% of them would recommend their company as a great place to work, which helps attract top talent.
5. **Stronger External Relationships**
High-trust organizations foster better collaboration with external stakeholders like architects, engineers, and contractors. This leads to faster problem resolution and stronger industry relationships, creating more opportunities for future work.
The study also highlights that trust can be improved through consistent processes, transparent communication, and a culture that values employee input and development.
