Arlington Heights was struck by a major fire on Thursday afternoon when a vacant, one-story brick building—once home to a plastics manufacturing company—caught fire and was completely destroyed. The blaze, classified as an extra-alarm fire, was reported around 6 a.m., and firefighters quickly found the structure fully engulfed in flames.
Deputy Chief Pete Ahlman described the scene upon arrival: "We had fire showing through the roof, and within a minute, the roof collapsed." The building, located at Arthur Avenue and Davis Street, just south of the Metra Union Pacific railroad tracks, had been unoccupied for some time. It was last used by Tower Plastics, which relocated to Burr Ridge in early 2011. Village officials confirmed that the property was up for sale.
Over 100 firefighters from Arlington Heights and surrounding areas worked to bring the fire under control. Ahlman called it one of the largest commercial fires in the village’s recent history, with towering 40-foot flames visible from a distance. Firefighters used a backhoe to remove parts of the collapsed structure, allowing better access to the interior. The fire was brought under control by noon.
Photos and video footage captured the intensity of the fire. The images show the building in complete disarray, with flames licking the sky and thick black smoke rising into the air. Video clips from Scott Peterson provide further visual evidence of the destruction.
More updates are coming tomorrow.
