A large, high-alarm fire broke out in a vacant building in Arlington Heights on Thursday afternoon. The structure, which previously housed a plastics manufacturing company, was completely destroyed. Deputy Chief Pete Ahlman said the fire department received a 911 call at 6 a.m. and arrived to find the large, one-story brick building on Arthur Avenue and Davis Street, just south of the Metra Union Pacific railroad tracks, fully engulfed in flames. “When we got there, we saw fire coming through the roof, and just a minute later, the roof collapsed,” he said. The building had last been occupied by Tower Plastics, which moved its operations to Burr Ridge in early 2011. Village officials confirmed that the property was for sale at the time of the fire. Approximately 100 firefighters from Arlington Heights and surrounding areas worked to contain the blaze, which Ahlman called one of the largest commercial fires in the village’s recent history. Flames reached up to 40 feet high, and firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by noon. They used a backhoe to remove parts of the collapsed structure to gain better access to the interior. This is an exclusive report from ChicagoTribune.com.
