The Courier-News recently published a story highlighting how firefighters from multiple departments are coming together to support breast cancer awareness through a T-shirt fundraising initiative: Firefighters from six local fire departments have joined forces to sell T-shirts in support of breast cancer awareness. Meanwhile, Elgin firefighters are running low on their own stock of shirts for the cause. The collaborative shirt sale is being organized by members of Carpentersville Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4790. This marks the fifth year that Carpentersville firefighters have participated in such an effort, but it's the first time they've teamed up with other towns, according to Firefighter Tony Ferreiro. Last year, Carpentersville raised $4,500, which went to breast cancer programs at Presence Saint Joseph and Advocate Sherman hospitals. This year, the group aims to double that amount, with all proceeds going to Advocate Sherman. Carpentersville firefighter Chad Parker designed this year’s shirt, which features patches from all six participating departments—Algonquin, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Huntley, South Elgin, and West Dundee—alongside a pink ribbon and the IAFF logo. The multi-department T-shirts are available online in men’s sizes, and hooded sweatshirts can be ordered as well, with orders accepted until October 31st. A press release from the Carpentersville project states that firefighters face a higher risk of cancer due to exposure to carcinogens on the job. With one in eight women expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, the need for awareness and funding remains critical. In 2014 alone, over 232,000 new cases were expected, along with nearly 40,000 deaths. Most patients don’t have a family history of the disease, making prevention and early detection even more important. In Elgin, the T-shirt initiative has taken on personal significance. Firefighter Josh Soderberg shared that the project serves as a reminder of the struggle faced by Lt. Dave Hudik, who lost his wife, Cindy, to breast cancer in 2011 after battling the disease since 2006. Since then, Elgin firefighters have been selling shirts to the public and wearing a version while on duty. They’ve already sold around 200 shirts, with another 50 sold during an open house last weekend. Soderberg hopes to expand the program online next year. Each year, the October T-shirt drive raises about $2,000 for the cause. Carpentersville firefighters have also purchased 300 T-shirts, which are being sold directly at Station 2, located at 305 Lake Marian Road. Additional sales will take place at a benefit event at Rosati’s Pizza, 117 N. Kennedy Drive, on a date to be announced in November.
