The Courier-News has a story about firefighters from multiple departments coming together to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer through a t-shirt sale: Firefighters from six local fire departments have joined forces to sell T-shirts in support of breast cancer awareness. Meanwhile, Elgin firefighters are running low on their own stock of shirts, which they've been selling for the same cause. This collaborative effort is being organized by members of the Carpentersville Professional Firefighters International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 4790. It's the fifth year that Carpentersville firefighters have participated in this initiative, but it’s the first time they’ve partnered with other towns, according to Firefighter Tony Ferreiro. Last year, the department raised $4,500, with funds supporting breast cancer programs at Presence Saint Joseph and Advocate Sherman hospitals. This year, the goal is to double that amount, with all proceeds going to Advocate Sherman. Carpentersville Firefighter Chad Parker designed the 2014 shirt, which features patches from each of the six participating departments — Algonquin, Carpentersville, East Dundee, Huntley, South Elgin, and West Dundee — along with a pink ribbon and the IAFF logo. The shirts are available online in men’s sizes, and hooded sweatshirts can be ordered as well, with orders accepted until October 31. A press release from the Carpentersville project highlights the link between firefighting and cancer risk: "Firefighters exposed to carcinogens and other chemicals while on the job are disproportionately diagnosed with breast cancer — just one of many cancers associated with the profession." In 2014 alone, an estimated 232,340 new cases of breast cancer were expected, with 39,620 deaths reported. Notably, 85% of those affected had no family history of the disease. In Elgin, the t-shirt campaign holds personal significance. Firefighter Josh Soderberg shared that the project serves as a reminder of the struggle faced by Lt. Dave Hudik, who lost his wife, Cindy, to breast cancer in 2011 after battling the disease since 2006. Since then, Elgin firefighters have sold shirts to the public and worn a version of the design during shifts. So far, they’ve sold around 200 shirts, with an additional 50 sold at an open house last weekend. Soderberg hopes to launch an online store next year. Each year, the October t-shirt drive raises roughly $2,000 for the cause. Carpentersville firefighters also purchased 300 shirts to sell directly at Station 2, located at 305 Lake Marian Road. They will also be selling them at a benefit event in November at Rosati’s Pizza, 117 N. Kennedy Drive — the date is yet to be announced.
