August 5, 2015 – Over the past year, Nihon Sekkei, Inc. and Autodesk, Inc. have been working together to push the boundaries of building information modeling (BIM) in Japan. This collaboration has focused on creating a more efficient and integrated BIM system that supports construction and building management throughout the entire lifecycle of a facility. Recently, both companies released an update on their progress and shared their vision for the future.

The partnership has led to the development of an advanced BIM platform tailored to meet the specific needs of the Japanese market. Built on Autodesk Revit, this system aims to streamline workflows across architecture, construction, and facility management. Key features include:

  • Unified access to data across architectural, construction, and facility design processes, improving coordination and reducing errors;
  • Enhanced visualization tools that allow teams to review and understand structural performance and specifications more effectively;
  • Seamless integration with domestic design software, fluid analysis tools, and accounting systems, leading to higher quality designs;
  • Revised design standards that enable the reuse of drawings at different stages of a project, from planning to on-site execution;
  • Implementation of Autodesk Dynamo to automate design tasks and reduce lifecycle costs through algorithm-driven optimization;
  • Plans to introduce standardized information for operations and maintenance, ensuring long-term efficiency and sustainability.

Looking Ahead

Going forward, the two companies plan to test and refine their integrated BIM system across all phases of a building's life cycle—from initial planning and design to ongoing operation and management. The goal is to deliver a comprehensive solution that adds real value to facility owners and users in Japan.

In addition to refining their local system, Nihon Sekkei and Autodesk are also working to develop global workflows. This includes knowledge sharing and technical collaboration with international partners, including other companies and academic institutions leading the way in BIM innovation. Both firms are committed to open communication and technology exchange, aiming to benefit the broader industry with their shared expertise.
