Engine Company 115 responded to a basement fire at a two-story brick apartment building located at 12021 S. Eggleston. Battalion 22 activated the Still & Box alarm due to the fire quickly spreading to the second floor. It appears that the hydrants in the area may have been frozen, causing a delay in establishing a water source. Truck Company 27 was positioned in the 1/4 sector with their main line extended to the roof. The fire was managed by several companies using approximately four to five hand lines.
Interestingly, while the crews were inside the building, a neighbor decided he had had enough and wanted to leave immediately. He drove his car over a few of the hose lines but was quickly surrounded by six or seven firefighters and a police officer. As expected, he didn’t move much after that.
