Autodesk has taken a significant step in advancing cloud-based content creation by announcing its investment in RADiCAL, a New York-based company that develops an AI-driven 3D motion capture solution built entirely in the cloud. This move reflects Autodesk’s ongoing commitment to making end-to-end production more accessible and efficient for creators around the world. The investment follows recent acquisitions of Moxion and LoUPE, further strengthening Autodesk’s position in the evolving digital content landscape.
RADiCAL's platform is revolutionizing how 3D motion capture and human virtualization are done at scale. By combining deep learning, human biomechanics, and computer graphics, the company’s AI can estimate and track 3D skeletal movements from just a single video feed. This technology allows for the automatic animation of 3D characters and avatars, bridging the gap between traditional video and immersive metaverse experiences.
What sets RADiCAL apart is its accessibility. Unlike traditional motion capture systems that require expensive hardware or specialized training, RADiCAL’s cloud-based solution requires nothing more than a standard camera. This removes common barriers to entry, enabling artists, students, and independent creators to experiment with high-quality 3D animation without the need for complex setups or coding skills.
Already, leading studios, educational institutions, and event platforms like Aircards, Surreal Events, Savannah College of Art & Design, and Full Sail University are using RADiCAL to integrate motion capture into their workflows. With this new investment, RADiCAL aims to enhance its AI capabilities, expand its cloud infrastructure, and introduce more collaborative features tailored for film, TV, and game development.
Diana Colella, Senior Vice President at Autodesk Media & Entertainment, highlighted the value of RADiCAL’s approach: “RADiCAL’s user-friendly solution is ideal for emerging artists and next-gen creators. We’re excited to support their mission and bring real-time motion capture tools to even more professionals.â€
Gavan Gravesen, founder and CEO of RADiCAL, shared his enthusiasm: “Our team has always been passionate about media and entertainment tech. Being backed by Autodesk is a huge milestone. It will help us push our AI further, scale our cloud services, and improve collaboration for the creative industries.â€
Surreal, a web-based virtual event platform, has already integrated RADiCAL’s technology to allow presenters to engage with live audiences through real-time avatars. According to Nick Grant, co-founder and CPO of Surreal, “RADiCAL’s tech is transforming the way we connect with users. Now, anyone can control their avatar with just a webcam, making virtual events more interactive and engaging.â€
As cloud-based production continues to evolve, partnerships like this are essential for driving innovation and expanding creative possibilities. To learn more about Autodesk’s vision for democratizing content creation, visit the official blog.
