From excerpts of the ChicagoTribune.com:
On Monday, at a deeply moving ceremony held in North Chicago, officials from Flight for Life recognized the incredible efforts of the North Chicago Fire Department during their most dramatic rescue mission of 2015. During the event, local police officers and firefighters were honored for saving the life of a Chicago woman back in autumn.
The 22nd annual Scene Call of the Year Award for 2015 was bestowed upon the firefighting paramedic team consisting of Cmdr. Joshua Rickabaugh, Cmdr. Joshua Monroe, and firefighters Danny Roark, Joseph Hernandez, and Joseph Schimanski.
Nicole Wood, a Chicago resident, was riding as a passenger in a BMW SUV when it collided with a gravel truck along Route 41, just south of Route 137 on September 21. While the SUV’s driver escaped relatively unscathed, Wood found herself trapped under the twisted wreckage of the vehicle, pinned beneath the massive truck.
Rescue teams reported using nearly all the tools available in their vehicles to try and free the critically injured and unconscious woman. Route 41 was temporarily shut down to make space for the helicopter landing zone.
“We knew she had suffered multiple system injuries, so getting her out quickly was crucial,†explained Rickabaugh. However, he noted that “due to the complexity of the extrication process, it took us one hour and 20 minutes—typically, such operations take between 20 to 40 minutes.â€
North Chicago authorities emphasized the vital support provided by mutual aid teams from Naval Station Great Lakes, Knollwood, Libertyville, the North Chicago Police Department, North Chicago Police dispatch, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Flight For Life itself.
Following the ceremony, North Chicago Fire Chief Dell Urban remarked, “This was the call of a lifetime—a truly extraordinary accident. Several chiefs present mentioned they’d never encountered anything like this before, especially considering the length of time required for the extrication.â€
Out of approximately 1,000 emergency responses handled annually by Flight for Life, only a select few qualify for consideration by a panel of judges who evaluate them based on strict criteria including scene safety, decision-making during triage, critical thinking, intricate planning, effective accident scene management, integrating the helicopter into the operation, and going above and beyond standard procedures to care for the patient.
Thanks, Dan!
