This message comes from Eric Haak: --- I just got back from responding to a structure fire on the 6100 block of South Washtenaw Avenue on Saturday. By the time I arrived, which was less than ten minutes after the call went out, the flames had already been brought under control. I managed to snap a few photos, including one showing the spare tower ladder that Truck 39 was equipped with. Over the weekend, we were running low on spare tower ladders, so both Truck 34 and Truck 54 had to operate as primary apparatus at some point. It's pretty clear that these older E-One vehicles are showing significant signs of wear, especially around the body panels, but it seems like they're being used more often than our frontline rigs. Interestingly, Squad 5 was even running with an older air mask rig for their equipment box—Shop #G-487. Engines 88 and 101 were on scene, along with Truck 41 and Tower Ladder 39. Attached below are some images I took during the incident. The first photo shows a firefighter using an axe to ventilate the roof of the burning building—a critical step in controlling fires like this one. In the second image, you can see multiple firefighters working together to perform the same task. The third photo captures the thick plume of smoke rising into the sky, giving a sense of how intense the fire must have been initially. The fourth picture highlights one of Chicago's 29-year-old tower ladders, which still plays a vital role in our operations despite its age. Next, there's a shot of Engine 101, a workhorse of the department, standing ready to support the firefighting efforts. Finally, the last image depicts a firefighter with a grimy face after battling the blaze—a testament to the hard work and dedication required in our line of duty. --- Word count: 348
