In the early hours of December 14th, 2015, Chicago firefighters were dispatched to an industrial building fire located on the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue. The incident occurred overnight, prompting emergency responses including a Mayday alert and a Still & Box Alarm, along with an EMS Plan I activation when a firefighter fell through a gap in the floor. The firefighter was successfully rescued and immediately transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
According to excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com, the fire broke out in a three-story building that was under renovation. Reports indicated that there were numerous openings in the floors, which posed significant risks to the responding teams. As firefighters tackled the blaze, a member of Tower Ladder 34 tragically fell into one of these openings. A Mayday call was quickly issued, and paramedics administered emergency care at the scene before rushing the injured firefighter to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the firefighter succumbed to his injuries.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago later confirmed that the fallen firefighter had been conducting a search operation on the second floor when he fell into an open elevator shaft leading to the basement. Fire department personnel swiftly gained access to the lower level and transported the firefighter via Ambulance 22 to Christ Hospital, where he passed away.
Subsequent reports from the Chicago Tribune identified the fallen firefighter as Dan Capuano, a 42-year-old who had served the Chicago Fire Department for 15 years. He leaves behind three children. The fire was initially reported at approximately 2:40 a.m. and was confined to the second floor of the vacant warehouse before being brought under control around 3:45 a.m.
Following the tragic event, the Chicago Building Department sent representatives to assess the structural integrity of the building involved. This investigation aims to determine whether the site poses further safety concerns or requires additional measures to ensure the area remains secure.
This incident underscores the immense risks faced by first responders daily and highlights the dedication and courage required in such professions. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Firefighter Capuano during this difficult time.
