More than 10,000 buses equipped with Allison transmission serve Beijing Olympics visitors

In an interview with Chen Jing, the Regional Sales Manager of Allison China, who was involved in the 2008 World Bus Expo Asia Exhibition, it was highlighted that over 10,000 buses equipped with Allison transmissions are currently in operation in Beijing. These vehicles were set to support the transportation needs during the Beijing Olympic Games, offering reliable, efficient, and comfortable service to visitors. Allison Transmission is a global leader in providing automatic transmissions and hybrid systems for commercial vehicles. The company has established partnerships with over 250 major automobile manufacturers worldwide. Its products are widely used across various vehicle types, including buses, garbage trucks, fire engines, construction equipment, delivery vehicles, military vehicles, and specialized machinery. Founded in 1915 and based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Allison employs 3,600 people and operates regional offices in China, the Netherlands, Brazil, and Japan. With operations in more than 80 countries, the company has over 1,500 distributors and agents, generating annual sales exceeding $200 million. As the leading supplier of fully automatic transmissions for passenger cars and trucks, Allison has made significant strides in the fast-growing urban bus market. In 2007 alone, more than 14,000 vehicles were sold globally, reinforcing its position as the standard in the passenger car transmission market and a key hybrid transmission provider. In China, Allison holds the largest share of the automatic transmission market. Japanese manufacturers Isuzu and Hino have also adopted Allison transmissions, helping them gain a strong foothold in the European hybrid market. In regions where manual transmissions traditionally dominate, such as Eastern Europe and Asia, Allison has secured substantial orders. Recently, the company received a major order from Delhi Transport for 500 high-grade low-floor buses equipped with CNG engines—marking its largest bus order in India to date. Environmental concerns and government regulations have driven the adoption of hybrid systems in Europe, aiming to create cleaner and more efficient public transport. Since its launch in October 2006, the Allison hybrid power system has been successfully implemented in several German and Swiss cities. In North America, Allison celebrated the 1000th city equipped with the dual-mode GM-Allison hybrid system, with buses set to arrive in Las Vegas this month. By 2007, over 400 passenger cars had been fitted with the GM-Allison hybrid system. In South America, Argentina’s DOTA fleet, one of the largest in the region, now operates over 2,000 vehicles equipped with Allison transmissions. The GM-Allison hybrid system represents the initial collaboration between General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and the BMW Group in developing dual-mode hybrid technology, setting a new standard for sustainable and advanced transportation solutions.
