Price and 2.0 quite new Mondeo 2.5 listed before and after the Spring Festival
In late December 2002, there were rumors that the Mondeo 2.0 model was being phased out by Changan Ford, with some reports suggesting this move was in preparation for the upcoming launch of the Mondeo 2.5L. However, on December 17, Changan Ford officially denied these claims, stating that the Mondeo 2.0 was not only continuing production but also working overtime to meet growing market demand.
According to sources within the industry, the initial speculation about theåœäº§ (production shutdown) might have stemmed from temporary stock shortages in certain markets, particularly in Sichuan. Local media outlets, upon interviewing dealers, misinterpreted these stock issues as a sign of production halting, leading to confusion among consumers and the press.
It's worth noting that since the launch of Changan Ford’s first vehicle, the "Carnival," in January 2002, the European-market Mondeo had also begun production in China. The car quickly gained popularity among customers, prompting Changan Ford to organize a nationwide test drive campaign in mid-November, which helped boost sales of both the Carnival and the Mondeo.
"We are confident that by the end of this year, sales of these two models will surpass 20,000 units," said a senior executive at Changan Ford. To further strengthen its marketing strategy, Ford recently relocated several high-level executives from its U.S. headquarters and Ford Liuhe in Taiwan to Changan Ford. For instance, Ye Mingxin, who recently joined from Ford Liuhe, is now serving as a marketing consultant.
An insider at Changan Ford mentioned that someone with extensive experience in Ford’s Taiwanese operations would soon take charge of marketing high-end products, including the Mondeo, in the future.
Regarding the Mondeo 2.5L, Ian Tinworth, a senior powertrain engineer at Ford’s European Car Development Center, confirmed that the 2.5L model would be launched early next year, with a price expected to be similar to the current Mondeo 2.0 model.
By the end of this year, Changan Ford’s dealer network is expected to exceed 60, with plans to reach 120 by next year. This expansion of distribution channels is seen as a key factor in the company’s product launch strategy.
On October 17, 2002, Ford CEO Bill Ford announced in Beijing that the company and Changan Group would jointly invest $1 billion over the next few years to increase production capacity, introduce new models, and expand sales channels. Current plans for the expansion are nearing completion, and the location of the second factory and engine plant—long a topic of interest—has been largely finalized and will be officially announced soon.
