China made the world's largest wide plate mill
China has unveiled the world's largest wide and heavy plate mill, marking a major breakthrough in its steel industry. This advanced facility ensures the production of high-quality steel plates used for critical applications, including aircraft carriers. The mill, which measures 5.5 meters in width and is equipped with international-level technology, recently completed its final assembly and joint inspection at China Yizhong Group Co., Ltd. It will soon be delivered to Angang, one of China’s key steel enterprises.
Experts highlight that this wide and thick plate mill is designed to produce large-scale steel plates for military and civilian ships, as well as high-strength oil and gas pipelines and specialized steel for nuclear power projects. Its successful development not only breaks foreign technological blockades but also strengthens China's capabilities in energy transportation, shipbuilding, and national defense.
The 10,000-ton rolling force mill was jointly designed by Yizhong and Germany's SMS group, and it was entirely manufactured domestically. As the largest and most powerful single-unit equipment in the world, it consists of over 40 individual machines, including finishing and roughing mills. Its complexity and precision make it one of the most challenging industrial systems to build.
Currently, only a handful of countries, such as Germany and Japan, have the capability to produce such advanced equipment. The completion of this 5.5-meter wide plate mill demonstrates China's growing technological strength and its rapid progress in heavy industrial manufacturing. This achievement not only boosts domestic steel production but also enhances China's position on the global stage in high-end manufacturing.
