Danaher Motion, a global leader in motion control solutions, has launched an innovative torque feedback device (TFD) that enhances operator comfort while delivering the advantages of high-performance electric or remote-controlled systems. Introduced on March 12, 2008, this compact IP66-rated device integrates tactile feedback with position or speed signals through a steering wheel, making it ideal for electric vehicle systems (EVS), personal mobility devices, and off-road equipment. It allows manufacturers to build robust systems that combine the efficiency of electric steering with the familiar feel of hydraulic controls.
Geoff Rondeau, a product manager at Danaher Motion, highlighted the TFD’s ability to provide real-time variable torque output, simulating the natural resistance of hydraulic systems. This feature helps operators transition smoothly from traditional hydraulic setups to modern electric or steer-by-wire systems. Unlike conventional electric steering systems, which lack such feedback and require complex development efforts, the TFD offers a ready-to-integrate solution that simplifies design and maintenance.
The TFD is available in five standard configurations, offering torque outputs ranging from 2.5Nm to 12Nm. It can operate at speeds up to 10 million rpm at 120 rpm and is designed to function in extreme temperatures, from -35°C to 60°C. With dimensions of 83mm (inserted hole) by 102mm (fixed disk), the device is compact and adaptable, suitable for standalone integration into any electric or steer-by-wire system, or as part of a larger Danaher Motion platform.
Featuring advanced friction materials and a patent-pending electromagnetic drive system, the TFD delivers precise, proportional torque based on DC input, enhancing control and responsiveness. It also includes redundant sensors for fail-safe operation and easy maintenance. The modular design ensures flexibility for different applications. All components meet RoHS compliance standards and are compatible with systems certified under EN1175 and IEC61058.
Danaher Motion has been at the forefront of motion control innovation for over six decades, driving progress through its trusted brands like Kollmorgen, Thomson, and Dover. As a key division of Danaher Corporation (NYSE: DHR), the company continues to lead the way in developing cutting-edge technologies that boost efficiency and performance across industries.
