Too self-developed 35 cubic meters of mining excavator
When I first laid eyes on the 13-meter-tall, hundreds-of-ton "iron giant" standing before me, the reporter couldn’t help but express admiration: "It's incredible that they can produce such a massive excavator!" Taihe Group was nearby, working on coking coal. Company manager Lian Guangshe overheard and said with pride: "This is just 10 cubic meters. We also produce 35 cubic meters models, which are even bigger. The bottom of the coal bucket can hold up to 120 people!"
This impressive machine is the KW-35 mining excavator, independently developed and manufactured by Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Manufacturing Group. It has full intellectual property rights. When it comes to the KW-35, the company manager is always enthusiastic: "It weighs 1,050 tons, stands 26 meters tall, and has a working radius of 24 meters. Its bucket can carry more than 60 tons—equivalent to a train car. It's currently being assembled and commissioned at the Erwusu open-pit coal mine in Kazakhstan and will soon be put into operation."
Speaking about the R&D process of the KW-35, Wang Xiaoming, head of the development team and senior engineer at Taizhong Technology Center, shared the story. In the 1980s, Taihe introduced large-scale mining equipment technology from a foreign company, but the core technology remained out of reach. A turning point came in July 2004, when a foreign firm asked them to produce a model, but at a price far below production cost, refusing to raise it. This deeply hurt the company, leading some to propose developing the equipment independently. There was strong opposition: "If we fail, we might lose our current market share. It could even lead to bankruptcy!" But others argued, "If we succeed, we can push foreign companies out of the Chinese market!"
After 10 months of hard work, the self-developed KW-20 mining excavator was finally shipped. After over a year of operation, its performance reached international standards, with the highest monthly output exceeding 510,000 cubic meters and operating costs less than half of foreign machines. Following this success, the KW-27 and KW-35 models were developed seriously, truly breaking the long-term monopoly of over 20 million tons of open-pit mining excavators in China.
Gao Zhijun, Chairman of Taizhong Group, told reporters that for over 20 years, the company had fully absorbed and adapted foreign advanced technologies through joint manufacturing. They have now completely mastered the entire design, materials, welding, heat treatment, cold processing, and installation and commissioning technologies for mining excavators. As a result, their products now match the quality of similar international products. Today, these heavy-duty excavators are being exported to countries like India and Peru, marking a significant milestone in China’s industrial development.
