Too self-developed 35 cubic meters of mining excavator
When I first saw the 13-meter-tall, hundreds-of-ton "iron giant" standing before me, the reporter couldn't help but express admiration: "It's incredible to produce such a massive excavator!" Taihe Group stood nearby, and as they were excavating coking coal, the company manager, Lian Guangshe, chimed in: "This is just 10 cubic meters. We also make 35 cubic meter models, which are even bigger. The bottom of the coal bucket can hold up to 120 people!"
This larger "guy" is the KW-35 mining excavator, independently developed and manufactured by Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Manufacturing Group, with full intellectual property rights. When it comes to the "KW-35," the company manager never stops talking: "It weighs 1,050 tons, stands 26 meters tall, has a working radius of 24 meters, and the bucket can carry over 60 tons—equivalent to a train car. It's currently being assembled and commissioned at the Erwusu open-pit coal mine in Kazakhstan and is about to go into production."
Speaking about the R&D process of the KW-35, Wang Xiaoming, head of the R&D team and senior engineer at Taizhong Technology Center, shared the story: In the 1980s, Taihe imported large-scale mining equipment technology from a foreign company, but the core technology was kept secret. In a contract in July 2004, the foreign company asked them to produce the equipment, but at a price far below their costs, and refused to increase it. This incident deeply hurt the company, leading some to propose self-development. There was strong resistance: "If we fail, we’ll lose our current market share. It could even lead to bankruptcy!" But others argued: "If we succeed, we can push foreign companies out of the Chinese market!"
After 10 months of hard work, the self-produced KW-20 mining excavator was finally shipped. After more than a year of operation, its performance reached international advanced levels, with the highest monthly output exceeding 510,000 cubic meters and operating costs less than 50% of foreign machinery. Following that, the KW-27 and KW-35 models were developed seriously, truly ending the long-term monopoly of over 20 million tons of open-pit mining excavators in China.
Gao Zhijun, Chairman of Taizhong Group, told reporters that after more than 20 years of fully introducing, digesting, and absorbing foreign advanced technology, and co-producing with foreign partners, the group has completely mastered the complete design, materials, welding, hot and cold processing, and installation and debugging technologies for mining excavators. As a result, their products now match the standards of international similar products. Today, these heavy-duty excavators are being exported to countries like India and Peru.
