Last week, Autodesk made a strong impression at the SPAR International conference in Colorado Springs by showcasing its innovative reality capture solution, Autodesk ReCap. In recent years, the laser scanning, measurement, and mapping industry has seen rapid technological advancements, making these tools more user-friendly, cost-effective, and accessible across a wide range of industries.
Autodesk ReCap empowers users to collect real-world data and integrate it directly into their design workflows. Through point clouds and image-based 3D models, professionals can now work seamlessly within Autodesk’s design and creation software. At the event, Autodesk demonstrated how ReCap is transforming factory design, construction, and other sectors through a series of engaging presentations at their booth.
During the show, Mike Jolicoeur showcased how companies like Dearborn Midwest have improved their factory design and renovation processes using laser scanning and ReCap, resulting in increased productivity and reduced costs.
Autodesk ReCap was highly praised by attendees, even earning the “Best in Show†award from the CAD blog TenLinks. Roopinder Tara, founder of TenLinks, said, “Autodesk brings 3D modeling of the real world to a new level of accessibility and affordability with ReCap. Even small firms and individuals can now model entire landscapes or single objects, which can then be used for design, modification, or analysis.â€
At the event, Autodesk also partnered with 3D Robotics to demonstrate the IRIS UAV at the scenic Garden of the Gods. Attendees watched as the drone completed two missions—one manually controlled and one autonomous. The IRIS can fly up to 250 feet high and operate for 15 minutes at a time. Equipped with a GoPro camera, it captured over 100 images, which were later uploaded to Autodesk’s Photo on ReCap 360 web service to create a detailed phototextured 3D mesh. This model could then be used in various Autodesk applications for visualization or engineering tasks.
The team also introduced the concept of Reality Computing, a groundbreaking approach that bridges the digital and physical worlds. It involves capturing real-world conditions, analyzing the data, and applying the insights back into the physical environment. This process enables more accurate designs, better construction planning, and a deeper understanding of real-world environments without being physically present.
Elmer Bol, Director of Product Management for Autodesk Reality Solutions, emphasized, “Reality Computing and ReCap are reshaping how we interact with 3D data.
