Then, how should companies play a major role in technological innovation and effectively improve their ability to independently innovate?
Market demand is the reference system
Innovation must not be made by shutting down the door to engage in research and development. The significance of innovation lies in leadership. In addition to taking the lead in core technologies, we must also lead in understanding market demand. We must open our eyes to the market, watch our peers, and look at the industry. In the final analysis, in what areas should increase innovation, the standard is the market; innovation is successful, the standard or the market.
Reporter: In the past 10 years, Weichai has grown from a company with sales revenue of only 570 million yuan and a loss of 300 million yuan to an industry leader with sales revenue exceeding 40 billion yuan and profit reaching 3.5 billion yuan. What do you think is the driving force behind Weichai's development?
Tan Xuguang: The power of enterprise development itself is a compound problem, but it should be said that the core should be the ability of independent innovation of enterprises.
In October 2006, our 12-liter engine with independent intellectual property rights was put on the market, breaking the 12-liter displacement engine and 380-horsepower-plus engines monopolized by foreign brands. Now, the National III engine standard has just been implemented, and Weichai has successfully developed a new engine that meets Euro IV emission standards. It can be said that the speed of updating our products is very fast, and the response to the market is faster, and even in a certain sense, it is ahead of the market.
Reporter: How do you understand "leading the market"?
Tan Xuguang: Let me give you an example. For heavy trucks, it is often difficult to achieve both a lot and a quick run. For the lack of engine horsepower, we started the research. In 2006, we launched the Weichai Power (WD12) engine, the flagship product of the 300-horsepower and higher series. It is currently China's largest displacement commercial vehicle engine. Since 1996, the product began to be developed. After long-term road test, limit testing and market verification, it was confirmed that the technology was fully mature before it was introduced to the market. The market is highly praised for the performance of the WD12 engine, and we have therefore succeeded in the domestic market with more than 12 liters of engine displacement and 380 horsepower.
Standard setting is the commanding height
The highest level of technological innovation of enterprises is to actively participate in or lead the formulation of national standards and even international industry standards. Enterprises must dare to sprint to the industry standards, rely on the industry standards converted from technological superiority to establish their own competitive advantages.
Reporter: In recent years, the development speed of Inspur has accelerated significantly. It has also successively participated in the formulation of more than 10 national standards for enterprise informatization and tax control cash registers in China. Where do you think Inspur's development vitality originated?
Sun Junshu: First-class enterprises must establish the industry standards in the technical level by establishing brand advantages in competition. The first national standard for server security implemented in China in December 2007 was drafted by Inspur. We launched the first security grade server from 2001, and other companies have also conducted similar explorations. However, there was no single standard at the time. Since 2003, we have begun to call for security legislation and we have quickly gained attention. A research topic led by us was born.
Objectively speaking, our security level server is technically advantageous, but it is not enough to have a technical advantage. The technical advantage has to go through a process of turning it into a patent and then converting it into a standard so that the company can establish a relative position in the industry. Stable leading edge, and thus more calmly invest in the next innovation.
Creative thinking is a breakthrough
Not only does technological innovation need perseverance, it also needs “swiftness.†Sometimes it's a layer of window paper. It's simple to break through, and the principle of many things is the same. As long as we are keen to discover and bravely combine, innovation may become easy. Therefore, I hope all companies will build confidence.
Reporter: You are a cement originator, but the change does not prevent you from obtaining a patent and drive the rapid development of the enterprise. What do you think is the "slamming" of innovation?
Zhang Zhifa: Some people think of innovation as a very special thing. First they must carry out feasibility studies, and then organize many researchers to go to special high-level laboratories. Experimenting for many years, and spending a lot of money, it may not be successful. In fact, in many cases, innovation is a combination and it is a "light on the horizon."
For example, the microwave drying technology I invented used the traditional technology to dry glass fiber for more than 20 hours. Now my technology is used. As long as more than 10 hours is enough, the efficiency is doubled. Drying requires heating, which reduces energy consumption while reducing drying time.
This technology is inspired by an ordinary home appliance -- microwave oven. A few years ago, I happened to read the instructions for the microwave oven in the store and suddenly realized that I might have found a good tool for drying glass fiber. Since then, after a lot of experimentation, this technology was invented.
