Israel Regentis Biomaterials has introduced an innovative hydrogel designed for cartilage repair. This advanced material is made from a combination of polyvinyl alcohol and a specific amount of fibrinogen, making it a biodegradable synthetic option. Once injected into the damaged cartilage area, the hydrogel can be molded into the desired shape based on the site's needs, with the help of released fibrinogen. It promotes natural regeneration of cartilage cells, allowing them to integrate seamlessly with surrounding tissues.
According to Yaya Hill Taur, the CEO of Israel Regentis Biomaterials, the key challenge in developing such materials is aligning tissue regeneration with the rate of biodegradation. Many existing options fail because they degrade too quickly, leaving little time for healing. The company’s hydrogel offers high controllability by adjusting the ratio of polyvinyl alcohol to fibrinogen. When the polyvinyl alcohol content is higher, the degradation process slows down, giving cartilage cells more time to grow and repair the injury effectively.
Knee cartilage, a transparent and vital soft tissue, plays a critical role in joint lubrication, shock absorption, and weight distribution. However, when damaged, it has limited regenerative capacity due to poor blood supply. With a global market for cartilage regeneration valued at $1.6 billion, and over 400,000 patients awaiting treatment in the U.S. and Europe, there's a clear need for better solutions. This new technology aims to fill that gap.
