In July, the accumulative production and sales of automobiles have exceeded 5 million SUVs.
In July of this year, the automotive industry saw a month-over-month decline in both production and sales. However, when compared to the same period last year, the sector still showed strong year-on-year growth, particularly in the SUV segment, which experienced a significant surge.
Looking at passenger cars specifically, most categories saw a drop in production and sales from June, except for multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), which had a slight increase. Among passenger car types, crossover models saw the steepest decline. On the other hand, when comparing to July 2023, all passenger car segments continued to grow, with SUVs leading the way—production rose by 103.39% and sales by 100.80%. The production-to-sales ratio for SUVs was the highest at 110.33%, while crossovers came in slightly lower but still above 90% at 91.59%.
For commercial vehicles, July brought mixed results. While non-complete passenger vehicles saw a small rise in production, other categories declined, especially non-integrated trucks and buses. Year-on-year, non-integral passenger vehicles saw a slight drop, but other commercial vehicle types maintained robust growth. Semi-Trailer tractors led the way, with production up 130% and sales up 140% compared to the same period last year. Overall, most commercial vehicle segments had a production-to-sales ratio above 100%, indicating strong demand.
In terms of major manufacturers, the top 10 in July were FAW, SAIC, Dongfeng, Changan, BAIC, GAC, Chery, Brilliance, JAC, and Hafei. Brilliance and JAC saw minor increases, while others experienced declines. Changan and Chery saw the biggest drops, down 37.50% and 21.80% respectively. Together, these ten companies accounted for 83% of total automobile sales in July, totaling 53.1 million units.
This data highlights the ongoing dynamics in the automotive market, where certain segments are performing strongly despite overall monthly dips. With continued growth in SUVs and commercial vehicles, the industry remains resilient and adaptable.
