At present, China's domestic tunnel boring machine research and development has made a major breakthrough
Recently, a reporter learned from the first Science and Technology Conference of China Railway Tunnel Co., Ltd. that the company, in collaboration with Zhejiang University, Henan University of Science and Technology, and other research institutions, has made significant progress in the development of full-section tunnel boring machines (TBMs) under the national "863" program. This marks a major breakthrough in the domestic production of advanced tunneling equipment.
China Railway Tunnel Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Engineering Corporation, is recognized as the first high-tech enterprise in Henan Province and holds the highest level of mechanization in tunnel and underground construction within China. The company's research committee plays a key role in driving innovation and technological advancement in the field.
In 2003, the company established the National "863" Plan Research Center for Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) in Xinxiang City, along with a manufacturing and assembly center. It has since undertaken two key tasks under the theme of "Robot Technology in Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Technology" of the national "863" program. Over the past two years, the technical design of a 6.3-meter-diameter shield machine, as well as research on tool-cutter design and hydraulic drive systems, has been successfully completed.
In 2004, the company completed its work on Shanghai Metro Line 2. Since then, it has designed and co-manufactured several shield machines and TBMs, assembling two units at the factory. These machines are currently operating smoothly in the Guangzhou Metro No. 4 Xiaoxin Section and the Liaoning Dahufang Water Transfer Project. Additionally, the company’s self-developed TBM and shield construction products have been widely applied in urban subway and tunnel projects across the country. Six of these innovations have received national patents.
In July 2005, the company was approved by an expert panel from the Ministry of Science and Technology to continue participating in the national "863" program, taking on tasks related to both the "10th Five-Year" and "11th Five-Year" plans for shield machine development.
Experts in the field, including Liu Weining, an executive member of the International Tunnel Association and professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, have praised the company’s achievements. They believe that the recent breakthroughs in domestic TBM technology will significantly enhance the industrialization and mechanization levels of tunnel and underground construction in China.
Notable figures such as Wang Mengshu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Guo Shanyun, chairman of the Tunnel and Underground Engineering Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society, Liu Chun, former deputy chief engineer of China Railway Engineering Corporation, and Wang Jianyu, former dean of the China Railway Southwest Research Institute, have all acknowledged the company’s outstanding contributions to the development of tunnel boring machines in the country.
